Scotiabank gives $5m to Gleaner's Olympic coverage

Sponsorship and Marketing Manager Shelley Sykes-Coley

Banking giant Scotia-bank Jamaica Limited yesterday confirmed its 'Gold' sponsorship of The Gleaner's exciting London 2012 Olympic coverage programme - 'Daegu to London' - with a cheque presentation at the newspaper's North Street office yesterday.

The $5-million commitment will be used to help finance the company's coverage of several major local and international track-and-field meets, and power the project's upcoming all-island photo exhibition, which is dubbed: 'The Journey of Champions: 50 Years of Athletic Excellence'.

Sponsorship and Marketing Manager Shelley Sykes-Coley welcomed the partnership and highlighted its educational and patriotic value.

"We are very happy to be on-board with this exhibition on such a historic occasion to help mark the 50th anniversary of our Independence. We are proud of the achievements of our athletes and we are happy to be able to partner with The Gleaner to showcase the extraordinary talent we possess as a people in the area of track and field," said Sykes-Coley.

"With the highly anticipated Olympics not far away, it is covering a topical and relevant subject that brings us all together as Jamaicans, inspiring pride and patriotism. It is also an educational tool for the younger generation to learn about the groundwork and the legacy that our athletic greats have left for the present and upcoming generation of athletes," she added.

Created by respected curator Susanne Fredricks, the exhibition, which will highlight The Gleaner's unmatched photo archive, will be launched at the St Catherine Parish Library on February 1 before moving to five other major libraries across the island.

The Manchester (March 1-16), St Elizabeth (April 7-13), Hanover (April 25-May 11), St Ann (May 30-June 15) and Kingston and St Andrew (June 27-July 13) parish libraries will all host the exhibition over the coming months.

Interesting exhibition

Editor-in-Chief Garfield Grandison, who collected the cheque on behalf of The Gleaner, was also excited about the project and encouraged Jamaicans to take the opportunity to experience the rarely seen images and memorabilia that would be on display at each location.

"This is a very interesting exhibition that as many people as possible should make an effort to view," said Grandison. "It will make you proud to be Jamaican.

"It is important to remind the nation at this time as we celebrate 50 years if Independence about the country's outstanding performance at these games," Grandison added before lauding the financial institution for its support of the project.

"We are delighted to have Scotiabank as sponsor. This is another signal that this bank is truly committed to Jamaica, its people and its continued growth and development."

The Daegu to London Olympic project, which started in June last year, has already seen an unprecedented coverage focus on local and international track and field events such as the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea; the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France; the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Champion-ships and the Pan American Games in Guadelajara, Mexico.

Among the local and international events on the programme's calendar this year are the Gibson Relays, ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships, IAAF World Indoor Championships (Istanbul), Penn Relays (USA), Carifta Games (Bermuda), IAAF World Junior Championships (Barcelona, Spain) and the Olympic Games in London.
